Meet Ruth Asawa, the ultimate wire wizard of the 20th century!

She was a remarkable Japanese American artist who brought sculpture to new heights by crafting intricate and delicate structures using just wire. Her creativity knew no bounds, and she constantly pushed the limits of traditional sculpture and space. Asawa was a master at exploring the relationship between form and space, showcasing how negative space could be just as vital as positive space in creating breathtaking sculptures.

The journey

Ready to dive into the most exciting part of the project – choosing the perfect cover for my Ruth Asawa book! With so many amazing pieces to choose from, it was a tough decision. But after careful consideration, I decided to showcase Asawa’s wired sculptures, which were the heart of her career. Her works were heavily influenced by nature, so I incorporated copper and organic forms to create a stunning cover.

The outcome

The result of the book design perfectly captures the essence of her work and the magic that she brought to the art world. The copper centrepiece was a deliberate choice, as it represents the versatility of her creations, allowing each person to interpret it in their unique way. I wanted to ensure that the book highlighted the layers and complexity of her work, providing readers with an in-depth look at her life and career. It’s a perfect tribute to one of the most innovative and influential sculptors of the modern era.
